More Ima Bee July Blocks

Here are two more Circle of Geese paper pieced blocks for my Flickr Bee.   The first one here was a totally scrappy, messed up version that I tried first before realizing it wasn't supposed to be scrappy.  Brilliant me said, self, make two at the same time to make it easier on yourself.  Hence the mostly warm colors with one quadrant of cool colors.  I'm sending it because why not?  Maybe she'll hide use it on the back :P  The next one is my favorite.  I really gravitate towards cool colors personally, and I love the black background fabric!

This hurts my eyes!

Much more soothing :)

July Ima Bee Block #1

For this month's Ima Bee, the Queen Bee wanted a paper pieced Circle of Geese block using black for the outer background and light grey or white for the center, and bright colors for the geese.  Here's my first version, 12 1/2" square.  The black is a Robert Kaufman print, the center is Cloud9 for JoAnn, and the geese are Valorie Wells Nest (orange), Moda Oliver and S (pink), and Lizzy House Pearl Bracelet (yellow).  For my next version, I'm going to use a lighter center background to really make the geese pop!

Ima Bee Catch-Up

I made these lovely Schoenrock Cross blocks for Leila, a member of my Flickr Ima Bee.  They look great, but what a headache!  These were paper pieced, and I found it easiest to make freezer paper templates first.  When you do that, make sure you are consistent with the side of the fabric you're ironing them to, otherwise things won't turn out right :)

Leila sent us the background fabric, which I think was Bella Aloe, and then we had specific instructions for the rest of the colors.  She already has the quilt top put together and is adding borders.  Meanwhile, my blocks are sitting next to my sewing machine but I have so many other WIPs on hand right now, I won't be getting to them in awhile.  If I'd get off Bloglovin, maybe the quilt in my lap would be bound by now!

I'm posting this on the Paper Piecing Party at Quiet Play, which will be happening every Friday.  Join us!

New York Beauty Update

****UPDATE*****
These links listed below have gone inactive.  I don't know why and I'm sorry they have, but I don't have any other sources for these patterns.  I'm as sad as you are, because, doh! I didn't print them all out....

I've been getting a lot of emails regarding the source of my NYB pattern.  The original link to the pattern seems to be no longer working.  I've found links to the PDF versions of the templates that were my original inspiration and I used NYB #4.  Hope this helps everyone looking for them!  These patterns are all free and created by Donna Duquette.

New York Beauty Center: Finished!!

I finished my NYB center for the DMQG round robin just in time.  I did decide to set it on point and am really happy I did so.  Maybe I'll applique something onto the corners later on.  Or maybe I'll leave it blank and enjoy the fresh clean design.  I'm really thrilled with how it turned out!  I won't be seeing it back for another 5 months and the anticipation may just kill me!

Oh and wouldn't you know that now there's a New York Beauty quilt along?  Maybe I'm just ahead of the trend :)

New York Beauty #3

I can't believe I'm 3/4 of the way through this project.  I'm having fun and can't wait to try other paper pieced projects, like Lee's Summer Sampler Series of course ;)  Once I have the fourth done, I'm sewing them in a circle but I'm not quite sure what will happen after that.  We'll cross that bridge later but before Feb 9 when I have to pass this baby on!  It'll be a long 6 months before I get it back.  Pretty much all of my other projects are on hold right now, but I'm itching to start a new quilt even though I have 1, 2, 3...6 or 7 quilt tops finished and needing to be quilted, not to mention 3 quilt tops in various stages of progress!

New York Beauty, Take 2

Here's the second of four New York Beauty blocks I'll be making for the Dallas Modern Quilt Guild round robin bee starting next month.  Read about it here.  I'm loving how they are turning out!  I've jumped ahead and already picked out the other 2 center yellows and 2 middle blues.  I'm trying to decide if I should just finish the 4 and leave as is, or if I should set it en point and do some fancy stuff before turning it in.  What do you think?

Forgot to mention my favorites in this block - see the tiny pink elephants and the crown I oh so amazingly managed to fussy cut?  :D

Well Hello again!

I've been a blog slacker, I'll admit it.  Back to the Work in Progress Wednesday fun now!  The Dallas Modern Quilt Guild is having a round robin quilt swap starting next month.  I make a center block and pass that onto another group member who adds a border to it.  Repeat 4 more times and then we have a quilt!  I get the quilt back that I made the center block.  I wanted to try something new and also I wanted something that would be bright, cheerful, and bold.

I've been perusing Flickr for ideas and decided to make a New York Beauty!  Here's the first finished block.  Would you believe I've never paper pieced before?  I thought it was pretty fun actually once I figured out what to do.  Curved piecing?  Um...only if I have to :)  I'm super pleased with how it turned out.  I'm going to make 4 blocks and sew them into a circle for my central block.  I'm proud of myself for using mostly scraps for the colored parts.  Here's the link to the pattern I used: New York Beauty #4
